All 8 rooms, explained
1. Wooden stairs
The front door of the White Tower is high up, not on the ground. People climbed a wooden staircase to reach it.
Fun fact The wooden stairs could be taken away during an attack, so enemies could not reach the door.
2. Basement
The basement is under the ground floor. It was used to store food, drinks and supplies, and one room has a well for water.
Fun fact Its only light came through small, thin windows called slits.
3. Entrance floor
The entrance floor is where people came in. The officials who ran the Tower probably worked in its rooms.
Fun fact The White Tower had four fireplaces to keep its rooms warm.
4. Great hall
The great hall is the biggest room on the upper floor. It is tall and open, with a gallery running high around the walls.
Fun fact The White Tower is about 27 meters (90 feet) tall on its south side.
5. St John's Chapel
Saint John's Chapel is a church inside the White Tower. It has round stone arches and thick, round columns.
Fun fact The chapel's rounded end bulges out of the tower wall, and you can see it from outside.
6. Spiral staircase
A spiral staircase winds up through every floor inside one of the corner towers. People used it to go up and down.
Fun fact This is the only round tower of the four corners. The other three are square or bulge out for the chapel.
7. Garderobe
A garderobe is a medieval toilet. In the White Tower, the toilets were built right inside the thick stone walls.
Fun fact Waste from the toilets went down through the walls and out of the castle.
8. Roof and lookout
From the roof, guards could watch the River Thames and the city all around. The four corner towers rise above it.
Fun fact The corner towers have lead domes with golden weathervanes on top.
