Submarine Batteries

Batteries, orange cables and the engineer.

Enter this world

Under the floor are the batteries that power the submarine. Meet the engineer who looks after them.

All 8 parts, explained

  1. 1. Battery boxes

Rows of big blue boxes are the batteries. Together they power everything on the submarine.

Fun fact The batteries are heavy, and being low in the hull helps keep the submarine steady.

  2. 2. Engineer

An engineer lifts a floor panel to check the batteries and their cables.

Fun fact The batteries are checked often to make sure they stay cool and safe.

  3. 3. Workbench

At the workbench, the engineer and a technician repair a motor part with careful tools.

Fun fact Small parts are kept in trays so none get lost.

  4. 4. Cables

Thick orange cables carry electricity from the batteries to the motor and the rest of the submarine.

Fun fact Cables carrying lots of electricity are often colored bright orange as a warning.

  5. 5. Walkway

A metal walkway runs between the batteries so the crew can reach every one.

Fun fact The holes in the walkway let air move around the batteries.

  6. 6. Floor hatch

The floor of the cabin above lifts up like a lid to reach the batteries underneath.

Fun fact Most of the submarine's machines are hidden under the floor.

  7. 7. Cooling

Fans and pipes keep the batteries cool, because they warm up when they work hard.

Fun fact Batteries last longer when they are kept at a steady temperature.

  8. 8. Electric motor

At the back of the submarine, the batteries' power turns the electric motor.

Fun fact The motor uses the same kind of power as an electric car.
