All 12 parts, explained
1. The cook
The cook stirs a big pot of vegetable stew on the small electric stove.
Fun fact Pots have rails around them on the stove so they do not slide.
2. Food on board
The crew eats pasta, rice, soup, bread, fresh fruit and vegetables, and food from cans.
Fun fact Food is stored in jars and boxes that close tightly.
3. Dinner together
The crew sits close together around the small table to share the hot meal and talk.
Fun fact Meals are a time to rest and talk after a long shift.
4. Electric stove
The stove is electric. There is no gas or open fire anywhere on the submarine.
Fun fact Keeping fire away is important in a closed space with no windows to open.
5. Oven
A small electric oven bakes bread and warms meals for the whole crew.
Fun fact The smell of baking bread spreads through the whole submarine.
6. Porthole
Even the galley has a porthole, so the cook can see the sea while cooking.
Fun fact Few kitchens in the world have a view of the deep sea.
7. Storage jars
Jars of pasta, rice and spices sit on shelves with rails that stop them falling off.
Fun fact Every shelf on a submarine has a rail or a strap.
8. Mess table
The table where the crew eats is called the mess. It is small, so everyone sits close together.
Fun fact The same table is used for meals, meetings and games.
9. Breakfast
A crew member brings bowls of food to the table. Breakfast is a cheerful start to the day.
Fun fact The crew eats at different times, depending on when their shift starts.
10. Cleaning up
After the meal, everyone helps wipe the table, wash the dishes and tidy up.
Fun fact Water is used carefully, because the submarine carries only what fits in its tanks.
11. Free time
When the work is done, the crew plays music, draws and plays games at the table.
Fun fact A guitar is a favorite on many expeditions.
12. Bunks
Through the doorway at the back are the narrow bunks where the crew sleeps between shifts.
Fun fact The sleeping area is close to the galley, so it is never far to go.
