Water and Stores

The fresh water tank, the pump and the supplies.

Enter this world

Everything the crew needs has to fit inside. Look closer at the water tank and the stores.

All 8 parts, explained

  1. 1. Fresh water tank

The big white tank holds fresh water for drinking, cooking and washing.

Fun fact Even though the submarine is surrounded by water, sea water is too salty to drink.

  2. 2. Water pump

A blue electric pump pushes the fresh water through pipes to the galley and washroom.

Fun fact Pumps are checked often, because the crew depends on them.

  3. 3. Technician

A technician checks a valve and a filter to make sure the water stays clean.

Fun fact A valve is like a tap that opens and closes a pipe.

  4. 4. Food jars

Rows of jars hold rice, pasta, beans and lentils, which keep for a long time.

Fun fact Dried food is light and takes little space.

  5. 5. Bags

Canvas bags hold spare clothes, bedding and equipment, packed tightly on shelves.

Fun fact Soft bags fit into odd-shaped spaces better than boxes.

  6. 6. Storage boxes

Metal boxes with lids hold tools, spare parts and supplies, strapped in place.

Fun fact Straps stop heavy boxes from moving when the submarine tilts.

  7. 7. Porthole

A small round porthole lets a little blue light from the sea into the storeroom.

Fun fact The color of the sea changes from blue to dark as you go deeper.

  8. 8. Batteries

Below the storeroom floor are the big batteries that power the whole submarine.

Fun fact The floor panels lift up so the crew can reach the batteries.
